New Sonic LEGO sets and Minifigures coming?

Here at the Brickland, we are all about minifigures. If you didn’t know, that’s the entire reason I get LEGO sets – for the minifigs! Today on social media, the LEGO group posted a cute teaser with the new, upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog Minifigures.

At first it appears we only get a glimpse of 3 sonic LEGO minifigures, but upon closer look there is actually a 4th!

The four new sonic Minifigures I see are: Eggman, Rouge, Knuckles and Shadow

Who is Sonic the Hedgehog?

Sonic the Hedgehog is a popular fictional character and the titular protagonist of a video game series created by SEGA. He made his debut in 1991 with the release of the game “Sonic the Hedgehog” for the SEGA Genesis (known as the SEGA Mega Drive in some regions). Sonic is known for his blue anthropomorphic appearance, red shoes, and his ability to run at supersonic speeds, which is his defining characteristic.

The Sonic the Hedgehog series is primarily focused on Sonic’s adventures to thwart the evil plans of the antagonist, Dr. Robotnik (also known as Dr. Eggman), who seeks to conquer the world by capturing and harnessing the power of the Chaos Emeralds. The games feature fast-paced, side-scrolling platform gameplay and have been a significant part of SEGA’s history.

A short history of LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Sets

LEGO has been making Sonic sets for years – from 2017 as I recall. The older sets are no longer available on LEGO.com but you can find old Sonic LEGO sets on Amazon or other resellers.

However there are still new Sonic sets being made – from regular ones to Sonic Brickheadz.

Little is known about the brand new LEGO sonic sets – all we know is what we can get from the Tweet from the LEGO group that is referenced above.

First of all, the person in the tweet is none other than the LEGO Designer Carl Merriam who is responsible for so many amazing LEGO sets. For instance, he had his hand making my favorite set from last year, the new Galaxy Explorer. He is also responsible for some Mario Sets, LEGO Minecraft and even the soon to be retired at the end of 2023 Haunted House!

The NEW Sonic LEGO Minifigures

Based on the tweet, there is a lot happening in that short video. You’ve got Eggman sitting atop Carl’s head. There are some LEGO “electrodes” on his temple suggesting that he is being controlled to take over the factory floor.

On the Factory floor there are robots mis-behaving. Lots of Eggman Logos are affixed to the machines and clipboards showing that they are under his control. What are they making? We have no idea- but according to the tweet they are hard at work.

The caption says: ” The team is working hard to fix this matter as fast as possible.” How much damage has been done? Hopefully we will find out more soon.

From what I can tell there are 4 new characters:

• Eggman
• Rouge
• Knuckles
• Shadow

Eggman LEGO Minifigure

Dr. Ivo Robotnik, commonly referred to as Dr. Eggman, is the primary antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a rotund, mustachioed scientist with a penchant for building robotic minions and attempting world domination. His character is defined by his intelligence, megalomania, and unrelenting determination to conquer the world, often at the expense of the environment and the creatures inhabiting Sonic’s world.

Dr. Eggman’s schemes typically involve constructing a wide array of mechanical contraptions and robots to assist him in his nefarious plans. He is known for his iconic, egg-shaped hovercraft and his ability to create intricate, formidable machines. Despite being the arch-nemesis of Sonic and his friends, Eggman is often portrayed in a comical, over-the-top manner, which adds a touch of humor to the series.

Over the years, Dr. Eggman’s character has been explored in various Sonic media, shedding light on his motivations and sometimes even casting him in more complex and nuanced roles. His presence in the series is a key element in the ongoing conflict and adventures of Sonic and his allies.

He appears to be a single modl for the body and legs with possible a new head mold, but it’s hard to tell from the tweet.

Rouge LEGO Minifigure

Rouge the Bat, commonly known as “Rogue,” is a captivating and sophisticated character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. She is a white anthropomorphic bat with striking red and black attire, and her character aligns more with an anti-hero or morally ambiguous role. Rouge is a treasure hunter and a skilled spy, often working as a government agent for the organization G.U.N. Knuckles LEGO Minifigure

It appears that the Knuckles minifigure comes with some spiled glove custommoulded hands instead of the usual lego claw hand.

Knuckles the Echidna, or simply Knuckles, is a prominent and loyal character within the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a red anthropomorphic echidna with distinctive spiked knuckles, which he uses to dig and climb, and he serves as the guardian of the Master Emerald, a powerful gemstone that maintains stability on Angel Island, his home. Knuckles is known for his strong and stoic personality, often portrayed as the serious, no-nonsense counterpart to Sonic’s more carefree nature. He is fiercely dedicated to his duty as the guardian, fiercely protecting the Master Emerald from anyone who seeks to misuse its power. Despite his occasional gullibility, Knuckles is a dependable ally and a valuable member of the Sonic team, known for his determination and unwavering sense of responsibility. His presence adds depth and balance to the Sonic universe, making him a beloved and iconic character.

Shadow LEGO Minifigure

With custom arm printing, and what appears to be a new molded head the Shadow version of Sonic could be my favorite so far.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a complex and intriguing character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He is a black and red anthropomorphic hedgehog who was introduced as a mysterious and anti-heroic counterpart to Sonic. With his striking appearance and distinct red streaks in his fur, Shadow possesses super-speed abilities similar to Sonic but employs them with a darker and more serious demeanor. His character arc is marked by themes of identity, vengeance, and redemption, as he grapples with his past and seeks a sense of purpose. Often portrayed as a loner, Shadow can display a cold and aloof personality, but his motivations are ultimately guided by a desire to protect and do what he believes is right. Over the years, he has evolved from being a rival to a more nuanced and heroic character in the Sonic series, offering a unique and thought-provoking contrast to the more traditional heroism of Sonic.
