The characters were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The first short, Puss Gets the Boot, was released in 1940 and featured the characters as Jasper and Jinx.
After the film’s success, MGM held a competition to rename the characters. Animator John Carr won the competition with the names Tom and Jerry, which he chose after a traditional American Christmas cocktail.
The Tom and Jerry series went on to win seven Academy Awards, more than any other animated series. The characters have also appeared in TV spin-offs, comics, feature films, and a musical theater adaptation.
